Deductible
A deductible is the amount you pay yourself before an insurance policy starts paying anything. It is the defining feature of a top-up health policy: set a deductible of ₹5,00,000 and the top-up ignores every rupee of medical cost below that line, which is why it costs far less than a base policy of the same size. The deductible is usually met by an existing base policy, employer cover or your own funds. Match it to what your base cover actually pays, or you will be left funding the gap yourself.
