Sum insured

The sum insured is the maximum a health insurer will pay in a policy year, and it is the headline number on the policy. Claims are paid up to that ceiling; anything beyond it is yours to fund. It resets at each renewal rather than accumulating. The figure alone does not tell you what you are covered for — sub-limits, co-payment and exclusions all sit inside it and can reduce what a large sum insured actually pays. In life insurance the equivalent figure is called the sum assured. Discuss the right level through IRDAI-licensed advisors.
