How it's calculated
The formula
For years 1–15: balance = (balance + yearly deposit) × (1 + r). For years 16–21: balance = balance × (1 + r). The year-21 balance is the tax-free maturity; interest = maturity − total deposited.
Assumptions
- Deposits for 15 years; maturity at 21 years from account opening.
- A constant rate for the whole period (the government revises it quarterly).
- Deposits within the ₹1.5 lakh annual limit.

Real-world scenarios
See exactly how the numbers play out in the situations people actually face — so there are no surprises before you commit.
₹1.5 lakh a year for your daughter
Depositing the full ₹1.5 lakh a year into Sukanya Samriddhi at 8.2% builds a maturity corpus of about ₹70 lakh by the time the account matures — on roughly ₹22.5 lakh of deposits — and every rupee of it is tax-free. It is one of the most powerful tools for a daughter’s future.
The highest government-backed rate
At 8.2%, SSY pays more than PPF or most fixed deposits, with the same sovereign safety. For a girl child under 10, opening the account early gives the deposits the maximum years to compound at this premium rate.
Tax-free and 80C-eligible
SSY enjoys full EEE status — the deposit qualifies for Section 80C, the interest is tax-free, and so is the maturity. Combined with the high rate, that makes the effective return hard for any taxable instrument to match.

Frequently asked questions
The details worth knowing before you rely on these numbers.
What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?
SSY is a government small-savings scheme for a girl child under 10. A parent or guardian opens the account and deposits for 15 years; the account matures 21 years after opening, with tax-free, compounding returns — among the highest available.
How is SSY maturity calculated?
Deposits are made for the first 15 years and compounded annually at the SSY rate. From year 16 to 21 no deposits are needed but the balance keeps compounding, giving the final tax-free maturity value.
What is the current SSY interest rate?
The SSY rate is revised by the government every quarter; it is currently 8.2% per annum, compounded annually — typically higher than PPF.
How much can I deposit in SSY?
Between ₹250 and ₹1.5 lakh per financial year, for a maximum of 15 years from opening. Deposits qualify for a deduction under Section 80C.
Is SSY tax-free?
Yes — SSY has EEE status: deposits are deductible under 80C, the annual interest is tax-free, and the maturity amount is fully exempt from tax.
Who can open an SSY account, and how many are allowed?
A parent or legal guardian can open an SSY account for a girl child before she turns 10. A family can open a maximum of two accounts — one per girl — with exceptions allowed for twins or triplets. Each girl can have only one account.
When can I withdraw money from SSY?
The account matures 21 years after opening, when the full balance is paid tax-free. Before that, a partial withdrawal of up to 50% of the previous year’s balance is allowed once the girl turns 18, for her higher education or marriage. Otherwise the money stays locked and compounding.
What if I miss a yearly SSY deposit?
The account becomes inactive, but you can revive it by paying a ₹50 penalty plus the ₹250 minimum for each missed year. Depositing at least the ₹250 minimum every year keeps it active. Premature closure is allowed only in specific situations, such as the account-holder’s death or genuine hardship.
