How it's calculated
The formula
Maturity ≈ R × [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i], where R is the monthly deposit, i is the monthly rate (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of months. Interest = maturity − total deposited.
Assumptions
- Monthly compounding (a close approximation of banks’ quarterly RD compounding).
- A fixed rate and an unbroken deposit schedule.
- Returns shown before TDS and income tax.

Real-world scenarios
See exactly how the numbers play out in the situations people actually face — so there are no surprises before you commit.
₹5,000 a month for 5 years at 7%
A recurring deposit of ₹5,000 a month at 7% for five years matures to about ₹3.59 lakh — you deposit ₹3 lakh and earn roughly ₹59,000 of contracted interest. An RD is a disciplined, capital-safe way to build a lump sum from a monthly habit.
RD for savers without a lump sum
An FD needs the whole amount upfront; an RD lets you build the same safe corpus a little each month. It is perfect for a short-term, certain goal — a down payment, a wedding, a planned purchase — where you cannot risk the capital.
RD vs SIP
An RD gives a fixed, bank-contracted return; a SIP in equity funds aims higher but moves with the market. For a goal under three years, an RD’s certainty wins; for longer horizons, a SIP’s growth usually pulls far ahead — compare them in our FD-vs-SIP tool.

Frequently asked questions
The details worth knowing before you rely on these numbers.
How is RD maturity calculated?
Each monthly deposit earns compound interest for the months remaining until maturity. This calculator sums the future value of all deposits using monthly compounding, giving the maturity value and total interest.
What is the RD interest rate?
RD rates closely track FD rates — typically 6% to 7.5% p.a. for general citizens, with senior citizens usually earning around 0.5% more.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes. RD interest is fully taxable at your income-tax slab. Banks deduct TDS at 10% if your total interest income crosses the threshold for the year.
What is the difference between RD and SIP?
An RD gives a fixed, contractual return and suits short-term saving. A SIP invests in mutual funds with market-linked returns — higher long-term potential but with risk. RD for safety, SIP for growth.
Can I withdraw an RD before maturity?
Yes, most banks allow premature closure with a small penalty (often 0.5%–1% lower interest). Some also offer a loan or overdraft against the RD balance.
What happens if I miss an RD instalment?
Banks usually levy a small penalty for each missed monthly deposit, and repeated defaults — often six in a row — can lead to the account being closed and the balance paid out with reduced interest. Keeping the standing instruction funded on your deposit date avoids this.
RD or a monthly SIP in a debt fund — which is better?
An RD gives a fixed return and deposit insurance up to ₹5 lakh, but its interest is fully taxed at your slab. A monthly SIP in a debt fund is market-linked with a little risk, yet can be more liquid and, held over three years or more, often more tax-efficient. Use an RD for certainty and short horizons, a debt fund for flexibility.
Is an RD a good way to build an emergency fund?
It is a decent forced-saving habit, but an emergency fund needs instant access — and breaking an RD early costs a penalty. A liquid fund or a sweep-in fixed deposit, which you can withdraw any day, is usually a better home for money you might need at short notice.
Is this RD calculator free?
Yes — it is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. Your inputs stay on your device unless you choose to speak with an Apex TechFin advisor.
