How it's calculated
The formula
Future cost of goal = G × (1 + inflation)ⁿ. Required SIP = FutureCost ÷ ([(1 + i)ⁿ − 1] ÷ i) × (1 + i), where G is the goal today, i is the monthly return and n is the number of months.
Assumptions
- Constant expected return and inflation for the period.
- SIP invested at the start of each month.
- No taxes or charges deducted from the projection.

A ₹50 lakh goal in 15 years, inflation-adjusted
A goal worth ₹50 lakh in today’s money will actually cost about ₹1.2 crore in 15 years at 6% inflation. To get there with a 12% return you need a monthly SIP of roughly ₹23,700 — the calculator inflates the target first, so your plan funds the real future cost, not the sticker price.
Why inflating the goal matters
Plan only for the ₹50 lakh figure and ignore inflation, and you would fall lakhs short when the bill arrives. Always size a long-term goal in future rupees: a child’s education or a dream home costs far more in 15 years than it does today.
Shorter horizon, bigger SIP
The same inflation-adjusted goal over 8 years instead of 15 demands a much larger monthly SIP, because compounding has less time to work and inflation has less time to be outrun. Give every big goal the longest runway you can.

Frequently asked questions
The details worth knowing before you rely on these numbers.
How does a goal-based SIP work?
You define the goal amount and timeframe; the calculator inflates the goal to its future cost and then solves for the monthly SIP that, at your expected return, grows to exactly that corpus by your target date.
Why is my goal adjusted for inflation?
Because ₹50 lakh today will buy less in 15 years. Inflating the goal to its future value ensures the corpus you build actually has the purchasing power you intended.
What inflation rate should I use?
A general inflation assumption of 6% is common in India, but education and healthcare costs often rise faster (8–10%). Use a rate that matches the specific goal.
What if I cannot afford the required SIP?
Extend the timeframe, increase your expected return by taking more equity exposure (with higher risk), add a yearly step-up, or revise the goal. Small changes to time have a large effect thanks to compounding.
Are the returns guaranteed?
No. The required SIP is based on the return you assume; actual mutual-fund returns vary and are subject to market risk.
Should I run a separate SIP for each goal?
Yes — earmarking one SIP per goal (retirement, a child’s education, a home) lets you track each one’s progress and match its risk and horizon separately. A long-dated goal can take more equity; a goal three years away should be more conservative. Ring-fencing goals also stops you raiding one to fund another.
Should my investment mix change as the goal gets closer?
It usually should. Early on, more equity gives your money the best chance to grow; but in the last two or three years before the goal, gradually shifting toward debt or low-risk options protects the corpus from a sudden market fall just when you need it. This "glide path" matters most for fixed-date goals.
If I receive a windfall, should I put it toward the goal?
Often, yes. A lumpsum from a bonus or maturity can either reduce the monthly SIP you need or bring the goal closer. A practical approach is a steady SIP for discipline plus occasional lumpsums when you have surplus — just size the equity portion to how far away the goal still is.
