How it's calculated

The formula

Maturity value sums each yearly tranche grown by compound interest, P × (1 + r)^t, where t is the years remaining to maturity for that tranche. Annual tax saved = min(investment, ₹1.5 lakh) × your slab rate; effective cost = total invested − total tax saved.

Assumptions

  • Old tax regime (where 80C applies).
  • A constant expected return for the whole period.
  • Cess and surcharge not included in the slab tax-saving figure beyond the headline slab rate.

Frequently asked questions

The details worth knowing before you rely on these numbers.

What is ELSS?

ELSS (Equity-Linked Savings Scheme) is a type of diversified equity mutual fund that qualifies for a tax deduction under Section 80C, up to ₹1.5 lakh a year. It has a mandatory lock-in of three years — the shortest among 80C instruments.

How much tax can I save with ELSS?

Up to ₹1.5 lakh invested per year is deductible from taxable income under 80C (old regime). At a 30% slab that is up to ₹46,800 saved per year including cess; at 20% about ₹31,200; at 5% about ₹7,800.

Does ELSS save tax under the new regime?

No. Section 80C deductions, including ELSS, are only available under the old tax regime. If you opt for the new regime you forgo the 80C benefit — compare both in our Income Tax calculator.

What is the lock-in period for ELSS?

Three years from the date of each investment. With a SIP, every instalment is locked for three years from its own date, so units bought in month one unlock before later ones.

Are ELSS returns guaranteed?

No. ELSS invests in equities and is subject to market risk. The maturity figure here is an estimate based on the return you assume.

How are my ELSS gains taxed when I redeem?

ELSS is an equity fund, so gains you book after the three-year lock-in are long-term capital gains — currently taxed at 12.5% on the amount above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly equity-LTCG exemption. The 80C deduction is on the amount you invest; tax on gains applies separately when you redeem. Returns are not guaranteed and are subject to market risk.

How does ELSS compare with other 80C options like PPF?

ELSS has the shortest lock-in among 80C choices (three years versus 15 for PPF) and invests in equities, so it carries the highest growth potential — and the highest risk, since returns are market-linked and not guaranteed. PPF and tax-saving FDs offer fixed, low-volatility returns with longer lock-ins. Many investors use a mix; the right split depends on your risk comfort and time horizon.

Should I invest in ELSS as a lumpsum or through a SIP?

A SIP spreads your investment across the year, averaging your purchase price and building the habit — just remember each instalment is locked for three years from its own date. A lumpsum suits investing a bonus or meeting the 80C limit before the March deadline. Neither guarantees a better outcome, since returns depend on the market.
